two of my college roommates flew in for a california visit. while they were here we headed south for a visit to two different breweries. saturday happened to be a celebration at the lost abbey where they were releasing the angel's share - a belgian ale that has been aged in bourbon barrels. we got to sample this wonderful elixer, which was awesome because at $30/bottle, we weren't walking out with any to take home. ratebeer.com currently has it ranked as the 20th best beer ever - pretty good for a small brewery from san marcos, ca.

ReplyDeleteYou went to an Abbey??
ReplyDeleteI suppose it doesn't take much beyond a couple of drinks to convert a Mennonite.
Looks like heaven!
ReplyDeleteCafe, you crack me up.
ReplyDeleteAbuDhabi, exactly right!
bw, if you're looking for a new cheap eats place, especially as a poor starving student, I found it for you. It's on my website.
ReplyDeleteHowever, it's bring your own alcohol.
Cool! I never think about how brewing beer is similar to making wine, and that there can be these spectacular but expensive varieties. What does it taste like?
ReplyDeletehere are my taster notes:
ReplyDeleteAroma of plums and faint alcohol tones. Appearance of thick black ink. The liquid hangs on the glass when swirled. Thick tan head that dissipates. Flavor is incredibly complex - toffee, alcohol, chocolate, licorice, spice, dark cherry, like a multi-layered port. Palate is coated with the syrupy liquid. Entirely mouth coating and lingering on the tongue.
