#19 - artnight pasadena

august will be the last month of the sky is big in pasadena.  

i have accepted a position at salford mennonite church in harleysville, pennsylvania.  we will be moving in september, so august will be my farewell month to the city of pasadena.  when we moved here from virginia i posted a list of the ten things i would miss most about harrisonburg.  i figured that would be a good way to end our time here, so each day i will be doing one final rundown of life in this great city.  i have prepared two lists - ten things i won't be sad to leave behind, and twenty of my absolute favorite things about pasadena.  i am going to include ten positives and ten negatives, alternating back and forth each day.  concluding with my top ten things about life in pasadena.

yesterday was the first negative item, today i'll move on to the next positive one...

#19 - artnight pasadena

pasadena has a plethora of free community events throughout the year.  one of my favorites is artnight pasadena - an openhouse for the local museums (such as pasadena museum of california art, pictured above) and art galleries which is free to all.  the night includes shuttle service from venue to venue, foodtrucks, walking and biking tours, and much more.

another art night has come and gone.  i took the baby out in the stroller and we walked around to several of the venues.  clockwise from the upper left: paintings at armory center for the arts, pond gazing at pacific asia museum, accordion player at alliance francaise de pasadena, and alphabet prints on display at pasadena museum of california art.

this is a busy weekend - bike week is winding down, art night happened, and the tour of california hits southern california today.  i've got a whirlwind of various weekend photos coming up!

pasadena art night, baseball style

i apologize for my baseball focus this week - so is life during playoff season for a baseball fan!

yesterday night i ventured out to the pasadena library for a wonderful baseball night arranged by the baseball reliquary which was capped off by "5:04 p.m.: A First Person Account of the 1989 World Series Earthquake" , a film by jon leonoudakis. it really was a lovely night, you can get the whole rundown of the baseball event at the library right here.

game three of the dodgers/cardinals series is tonight in st. louis. our boys in blue go for the sweep!

i recently showed this clock tower from a different perspective, but i like this one too. you can catch a glimpse of a banner advertising the recent art night which petrea and ann profiled so well last week.

friday night lights

this is the last image from a series that started on monday following the pasadena art walk.

lights are strung up at the paseo shopping plaza throughout the year, but this art night banner was added for the weekend event.

okay, this is kind of a weak friday neon post, but i was struggling to fit it into my theme for the week.

third stop: norton simon museum

today's post is part of a series of images from pasadena's art walk night that happened last friday. for more details, check out the post on monday.

our last stop was the norton simon museum. a pretty fantastic museum that was open free to the public. i'd never been, although i've posted about it before. i agree with my wife that it may be the best museum in pasadena, if not all of l.a. county.

second stop of art night was at one colorado for yoko ono's wish tree project.

"an art installation that consists of 21 living crape myrtle trees installed amongst the cafe tables and chairs in the courtyard of one colorado. visitors are invited to write their wishes on pieces of paper and hang them on the tree branches."


my favorite wish was one that said "i hope the trees don't ever hang wishes on us"

art walk: first stop

our art walk tour began at city hall. we went to check out the music there and get our maps. it was a good place to start, and the atmosphere was nice. the music was interesting to say the least. a brief bio from the website:

"la ballena de jonas" from tijuana, b.c., mexico. this eclectic group of young musicians will perform original music with a european accent of the east, of the parisian tango, mixed with tones of the middle east and jewish culture."
