living rocks

another one from our recent trip to the huntington.  these tiny plants are desert dwellers, appearing just like their surrounding rocks to ward off animals that may want to gobble them up.

These guys are awesome: i've tried to grow them in my garden, but no luck. They rot at the tiniest bit of too much water. I've been able to keep one going for about 6 months-- and then a sprinkler hit it. It was a black mushy ball within days. But, until then-- it was super cool.

I had never seen anything like them. Amazing, really.
