lunar new year festival

i noticed the pacific asia museum was holding a large family festival yesterday in celebration of the lunar new year - and best of all it was free.  i bundled the baby into the stroller and headed down to check it out.  much of the festival was winding down by the time we got there, but it was still fun to wander around and check out the merriment.

dave cho at the coffee gallery

i've been waiting for a long time to make a trip to the coffee gallery's backstage music venue.  a free open mic night, and an invite from my friend dave cho gave me the chance i was looking for.

the line-up of local talent was awesome, and the venue was just as enjoyable as i imagined it might be.  i don't think i will be waiting so long to get back.

golden horizon

another friday rolls around, and another beautiful (and slightly jarring?) pasadena sky.

going to seminary in california

on of the first things that appealed to me about attending fuller theological seminary was the beautiful tree-lined walkway through the middle of campus.  palm trees, green grass, strolling faculty and students...  it seemed almost perfect.

and although i don't often pause to think about it, fuller has been a pretty amazing place to be.  the end is now appearing on the horizon - who knows where life will take us next?

pasadena's other seminary

i will admit i knew nothing about this place for several months after moving to pasadena - even though san francisco theological seminary is located right next door to fuller's campus.  this location is an extension campus to the main sfts campus in...  you guessed it, san francisco.

this school awards graduate degrees in theology and caters primarily to people who want to take classes on nights and weekends.

fuller seminary library at sunset

i've featured the fuller seminary library before, but while walking through campus the other day the light hit it just right.  i like the way it turned out.

prayer garden

tucked into a quiet corner of fuller theological seminary's campus is this stained glass cross.  for some reason this photo seems like an optical illusion.

congrats

last week i mentioned i was heading out of town to attend a wedding.  michelle and nathan were married on this past sunday, and i am sure their wedding was an incredibly meaningful, beautiful and enjoyable experience for all who were there.

congrats you two!  i wish you many years of joy and happiness.

from blue sky to trees to tarmac.

pasadena has many of these locations where the urban bumps up against nature in strange and beautiful ways.  you might even say it is where nature meets the road.

the counter

the counter is a chain of build-your-own burger restaurants here in the los angeles area.  pasadena's location is one of the newest, and it is consistently busy with people waiting to go in.  they do some cool things like serving fried onion and dill pickles, and having a decent selection of craft beer to put with your burger.

i appreciate the ability to choose exactly what you want on your burger, but it took me a long time to sort through the massive list of toppings.  i found myself wondering if i had made the right choice, even after my burger arrived.  still, it is worth checking out if you haven't been.

reserved for nbc?

i'm not sure whether this is more fitting for laurie's "caption this photo" theme, or petrea's "zen monday" theme.

i will let your comments be the judge.

i'm heading out of town for a friend's wedding.  it should be fun!

skywatching in pasadena

i thought this sky was pretty bizarre - sunset on the bottom, dark clouds, but some clear sky poking through.  strange.

porto alegre

i've never been to this brazilian barbecue restaurant in the paseo colorado shopping center, but i hear it isn't for the faint of heart - plenty of roasted meats, and all you can eat quantities.

don't look now, but today is 1 - 11 - 11.  fun stuff!

pasadena's robinson sons

mack and jackie robinson's profiles grace the area in front of our beautiful city hall, enshrined rightfully for their incredible contributions to american history.

big sky

i love this big old pasadena sky.  i hope you enjoy.  more skywatch friday right here.

on a more serious note, please consider raising your voice to condone actions about to take place in the area known as the arcadia oak woodland.  100-year old oaks are scheduled to be demolished starting tomorrow for the creation of a dirt storage pile by the county of LA.

one more from the parade

here is one final rose parade float for your viewing pleasure.  i missed getting a photo of the pacman float - one of my favorites - but i like this hollywood inspired design.  i hope you've enjoyed my brief review.

happy new year!

waves of color

this float was one of the more elaborately designed and decorated.  really a brilliant design.

seize the day

this was one of the most interesting floats of the parade -- i think it won an award for best interpretation of the parade theme.

rose bowl game

old news now, but saturday gave us the annual rose bowl game bringing the university of wisconsin its second loss of the year and texas christian university remained undefeated.  one of my favorite parts of the annual rose parade are the school-themed floats and the marching bands.

rose parade aftermath haze

as pasadena's biggest celebration of the year comes to a close, the streets are filled with trash, and the clean up is about to begin.  i'll post a few photos of the parade over the next few days, but in the meantime, you can check out a few perspectives from some local bloggers (i'll post more as they arrive).

january theme day: photo of the year 2010

while looking back through 2010, the birth of my daughter stands alone as the moment that means the most to me.  this photo was taken the morning after her birth.  she is being held by her amazing mother, and a rainbow appears in the sky.  this photo never appeared on the blog, but i think it is a fitting choice for today's theme.

this may not be my most perfectly composed shot, nor my most artistic, but it is certainly my photo of the year.

happy new year!
