david bazan

david bazan (formerly of pedro the lion and headphones) played at fuller seminary last night. i don't want to brag, but it was AWESOME! (and i never use caps on this blog!). i've been listening to bazan on and off since high school, so it was a dream come true to finally get to see him live. he played a great mix of his old stuff, more recent stuff, and unreleased songs. it was intimate - just him and a guitar and a room packed with a few hundred people. he spoke candidly between songs about politics, religion, recording music, and his favorite bands. all in all, a fantastic night.

update: just noticed that wess daniels posted a fantastic review of the show over at his wonderful blog, gathering in light.

we also recieved word that over the rhine will be playing at fuller in december... can't wait!

Lucky! David Bazan is my favorite songwriter! My first date with Tara was a Pedro the Lion show at the Black Cat in DC. The rest, as they say, is history.

Yes, all capitals means you are shouting, or it used to mean that when blogging first started and hunt-and-peck typists used capitals to keep from changing key strokes. So this guy must have been real good. I wish you had included a video of him at work.

Sounds great. What kind of music does he play? What kind does Over the Rhine play?

Danny, I had no idea you were a big fan!

Mr. Lincoln - here is a video of him from a recent DVD release - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVT6YQenzPw&eurl=http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=david+bazan&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&cli

very similar to what we enjoyed last night

Mr. E - He's pretty chill. Mellow rock might be my description.

Over the Rhine is kind of folky, kind of rock. Female vocalist who is just amazing. Also very mellow.

Great live music is one of the perks of an advanced education. I'm glad you're enjoying the benefits!

bw, that DaveB actually looks like you! Maybe it is you. Great talent.

The OTR website doesn't list any tourdate for your seminary in Dec -what's up?

Agreed Petrea! Although I found it to be more accessible when I was an undergrad student... maybe I just had more time back then!

CO - I wish I could compose and play like Bazan!

The story with the Fuller tour date for OTR is that the Troubadour has marketing rights to the band while they are here in LA. The band can't publicize the Fuller show in case it takes away from the Troubadour appearance. Weird, eh?

Enjoy the OTH show! I'm jealous. I e-mailed them and asked them to play "Drunkard's Prayer" at EMU for Tara's birthday. It was their first song and they gave Tara birthday greetings from on stage. It was awesome. I'll be waiting for a classic photo of Karen and Linford!

Ben - I've been a big fan of the singer/songwriter folk scene in recent years. People who play at McCabe's and the old Neighborhood Church concerts. People like John Gorka, Cheryl Wheeler, Susan Werner, Eddie from Ohio. But I've never heard of David Bazan or Over the Rhine.

Mr. E, you've given me a list to check out! I'm also excited to discover McCabe's...

PA - you are SOOOO right.

Ben, you MUST GO TO MCCABES! (AND I MEANT TO SHOUT THAT!!! :-) )

Bazan is amazing. Headphones reminds me so much of The Postal Service. I had never heard of Over the Rhine but, wow, thanks for the introduction! (And by the way -- I want YOU to load songs on my Ipod!)

Ah Laurie, we must be kindred spirits.
