walking the red carpet to gold class cinemas
pasadena's newest movie theater is actually more of a lavish movie-going experience. gold class cinemas just opened their doors to movie goers looking for cushy seating, plenty of legroom, and the chance to order food right from your seat. of course luxury like this comes at a price - over $25 per ticket.
we don't have plans to go any time soon, but i'm interested if any pasadenians experienced this yet...

I thought this was the "cheap" movie palace you went to recently?
I don't plan on going anytime soon. It's not my cup of tea. I can sit at home and watch a movie while eating dinner in front of the TV!
I was just wondering, has the Gold Class cinema taken over the former Gordon Biersch space? I was in Old Town on Friday night and there was what looked like a party there... now it occurs to me it might just be the bar portion of the theater?
Cindy, I've been wondering the same thing. I always liked that space for a restaurant, and was sad to see it go. Maybe you are right!
I'll be interested to hear who goes and what they think of it. I wouldn't mind trying it but...let's see what 2010 will bring.
I took the tour on Open Day, and they were just using Gordon Biersch's empty space to marshall the crowds. The cinema has its own kitchen, gathering space and cocktail bar down in the depths, as well as 6 screens and some very fine toilets. It would be a good place to go on a date, or a special occasion like an anniversary - there are only a few seats in each theater and they're very comfortable and fully reclining - it's like being in first class on a plane but with a huge screen in front of you and a good sound system. I love it that there's a compartment on the side of the chair to stow your purse! I usually go to the movies with my female friends, but the seats here are mostly in pairs, sharing a small table for drinks and finger food, and I'm not sure what they do if you're single person walking in off the street. It sounds expensive, but for $50 each, I think you could have some glasses of wine, and cheese and fruit served while you watch the movie (press a buzzer if you want more), and a coffee in the lounge. which seems a lot, but is probably the same, or even less, than seeing a movie at Paseo and finding a bar or restaurant afterwards. It's certainly more comfortable and convenient. So I might give it a try on a weekday, when the tickets are cheaper, if I can find a date to go with. Oops, I meant my husband.
I have een twice and I must say the experience is wonderful. The seats are very comfy and the food is good. I like the fact that you don't have to budget time before the movie to get dinner. My favorite feature is the blanket and pillow they bring you before the movie starts.
I think the value is decent. "Regular" movie theatres are now in the $12 - $15 range and the comfort is certainly a big plus. The seats also feature sound and rumbling (from the inside) ... we saw Avatar and it was pretty amazing.
I would try it out. Very fun option for a date night.
