one of the most interesting things about riding the california coast from los angeles to san diego is the interesting routes that are carved out for cyclists. the image above is of my friend andrew riding the bike path that has been built on old highway 101 - a road that used to be the main way to drive to san diego before the 5 freeway was constructed. this road has been unused for so long (by cars that is) that trees and plants have grown up through the pavement.
i happened to snap this photo right as the amtrak train was passing through.

Great to able to bike without having to worry about heavy traffic.
Very interesting. I am really surprised that not many bikers are seen on the road.

Well anyone who is riding from Mexico to Canada would be on this route, but it goes through a military base, so my guess is that not many people use it during the day for just regular commuting.
Wow, I didn't know it was unused. Could you walk it?
Cool post.
Hmm - I guess you could - there is some camping in the area, so I imagine there are hikers (but there isn't much else you'd want to walk to).
This is The Man. That is His Bike. There is His Path.
Or, is it?? Only peddling will answer...
