#5 - farmers markets

august will be the last month of the sky is big in pasadena.

i have accepted a position at salford mennonite church in harleysville, pennsylvania.  we will be moving in september, so august will be my farewell month to the city of pasadena.  when we moved here from virginia i posted a list of the ten things i would miss most about harrisonburg.  i figured that would be a good way to end our time here, so each day i will be doing one final rundown of life in this great city.  i have prepared two lists - ten things i won't be sad to leave behind (which thankfully, are already posted), and twenty of my absolute favorite things about pasadena.  we have arrived at my top ten things about life in pasadena.

#5 - farmers markets

picture this - fresh produce, all year long.  so goes life in southern california.  and if you live in pasadena, you are fortunate to have access to farmers markets on tuesday morning at villa parke, wednesday afternoon on south lake avenue, thursday nights in south pasadena, and saturday morning at the high school.  if you expand to a few towns over you find markets in countless others on all days of the week.  amazing!

guitar hero

i really enjoy the local farmers market scene for the busking musicians.  this guitar-playing guy has been on the blog before, and i always get a smile when i walk in his direction.  today's photo featuring him tucked behind the flower stand just seemed to work in a way that i wasn't quite expecting when i took this picture.

i hope you enjoy!

secret photographer

while wandering through the farmers market, i kept my camera by my side and just snapped off photos at will.  i was pleased to find this bright orange shopper in front of the large selection of plants for sale in the background.

i love when accidental photographs turn out to be really cool.

sweet corn at the farmers market

i've mentioned before that i spent many a summer picking sweet corn during my younger years.  every time i see fresh sweet corn - whether it be at the grocery store, the farmers market, or kitchen table - i always check it out to see if it is up to my standards.  the corn was looking pretty good at saturday's farmers market, and i almost got some (but buckled at the $7/doz price).

a little song from my sweet corn days...

corn, sweet corn, no body picks it better,
no matter what the time, no matter what the weather.
the only reason that i've been born,
is to pick another load of that corn, sweet corn.

shrooms!

this magnificent display was taken at the new(ish) south lake avenue farmers market a few weeks ago.  the south lake farmers market has been in a trial phase for the summer on wednesday afternoons and evenings.

i wonder if it has been successful enough that it will continue on...

what do you think?  if you are a pasadena farmers market fanatic, which one do you go to?  how do you feel about the south lake location?  is there a section of the city that needs a farmers market?

september theme day: open air market

a glimpse of one of pasadena's many farmers markets - this one is the villa park market which is held on tuesday mornings.  we also get a chance to get fresh produce at the wednesday south lake market, the thursday south pasadena market, friday market at robinson park, and the saturday morning market at pasadena high school.

as usual, this theme is being explored by hundreds of other daily photobloggers, in cities across the globe.

the apple guy

here is an image of one of the vendors at the tuesday morning farmers market at villa park.

i'm jumping the gun a bit on next month's first day of the month theme (open air market), but i've got one saved that i like just as much.  i hope you enjoy!

classical guitar + farmers market = perfect saturday morning

those of you familiar with the saturday farmers market at the high school will recognize this guy. he's there every week. i really should have asked for his name so that i could give him a proper shout out on this blog.

i love that this particular farmers market has live musicians. it makes the atmosphere even more wonderful than it already is. i thought i had already posted a photo of this gentleman, but i can't find it... can anyone else remember if i've posted his picture before?

kind of a funny story...

a few weeks ago at the farmers market i was somewhat surprised to see tents set up in support of the two presidential candidates. what do politics have to do with getting freshly grown food? maybe some of you could fill me in.

anyway, as you can see from this photo taken close to the end of the farmers market's open hours, one booth was still very active - making every attempt to convince those willing to listen (obama), while the other was being taken down prematurely (mccain).

i commented that mccain must be conceding the pasadena farmers market, but no one at his stand seemed to find that very humorous.

villa park farmers market

this is the closest farmers market to where we live and sadly this is the first image i've posted of it! pasadena and the surrounding area is blessed with farmers markets on pretty much every day of the week. so far i've been to this one on tuesday, south pas. on thursday, monrovia on friday, and the one at pasadena's high school on saturday. pretty cool, eh?
