which way is up?


these trees which line east mountain street have a distinctive lean. my guess is that they are probably pointing in the direction of the most consistent sunlight, but it's just a guess. this picture was taken on a sunday morning ride to church.

My other guess would be that they're leaning away from the wind.

quite possible that is the case. We don't have a great amount of wind in this part of Pasadena, but maybe once you get up that high...

and just as quickly as I made the comment about not having wind, we have the windiest day since we've been living in CA.

I have to say I live in Pasadena but I noticed that almost all of that species palm tree leans to the south in all of southern california. It has always bafled me.But I think its because they are all top heavy and there is a gradual slope from the base of the mountains down to the ocean and that it is gravity pulling them as they grow.
