introducing the castle green (day 3)

the building is different from almost every angle including this corner that looks almost like a castle turret. as you can see from the hanging palm branches, it's almost impossible to get a good glimpse of the hotel without some of the gardens creeping in.

for more info on the castle green, check out the website and wikipedia entry.

The Castle Green was in the movie Bugsy, playing a hotel in Cuba. It was hosting a meeting in Cuba with Lucky Luciano, who was played by rock impressario Bill Graham. I saw the movie in the theater at the corner of Delacey and Colorado and it was weird to see a building that I was so familiar with, only a few blocks away, and being asked to believe it was in Cuba. And Bill Graham is someone I used to see all the time at his Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, so it was odd seeing him play a gangster as well.

The annual holiday tour of the Castle Green, 99 S. Raymond Ave., is Sunday, Dec. 7, from 1 to 5 p.m. It will include all of the common areas (Grand Salon, Ballroom, Moorish Room, Sunroom, Turkish Room, etc.) plus about 20 private apartments. Tickets are $20; children under 12 are free. www.castlegreen.com (click on Friends of the Castle). Proceeds fund restoration of the building's exterior.

Maybe I'm just bitter that winter has come to Central Virginia, but enough already with the blue skys!

Isn't there anything else your perfect Southern California has to offer?

I'm dying for a cloud. Weird, right? Sadly the only thing in the sky when it's not blue is smoke.

Ah, that's the tour I was telling you about! $20 isn't bad at all. Worth it, I'd say. It's nostalgic inside.
