our local community college is one thing that is lacking from this photoblog. i never seem to catch it from the correct angle or something. i'm not sure what to make of this image either, the tree and sign post are out of place or something. i'm going to keep trying until i get it right!

I think you're right Ben---post and tree interrupt things too much. Maybe if you could get a shot of the sign on the building THROUGH the post and tree? Or something similar.
The traditional concept of shooting straight on, down the mirror pool with the band of trees guiding you is one option. I sometimes like to take a slight angle on something like that, not a "perfect shot" but something just slight amiss to draw the viewers eye to the "mistake" but still enjoy the shot.
The campus has changed so much, it is hard to find a good location for some shots. Hard to believe that is the same building I was in during one of the big early afternoon aftershocks of the '87 Whittier quake. I had been in the R building for the main shaking, which was at least brick faced at the time. Just went over to look at the campus map----omg! I hardly recognize it!. They turned the football field 90 degrees?!?! Guess I should pay a little closer attention.
Great points. I think the traditional shot of the looking pool is one to try and track down.
My daughter loves the "big bathtub" in front.
(Hey, where's Friday Neon!?)
Wait for a clear day and take the photo in front of the light post. I like the angle. Yeah, wheres the neon?
I'm back. I don't know if your familiar with the Museum of Neon Art Also it's free night tonight in Pasadena for Museums: Norton, Asian, History, etc.
Friday snuck up on me this week! Totally forgot about the neon. I'll have to check out that museum, PA! Thanks for the tip.
And also the tips on the angle are appreciated.
