it's my air-o-plane

did anyone else at the rose parade sense a theme (beyond the official theme of "a cut above the rest")? i noticed that at least three floats in the parade had planes flying off the front. i really like the design, but don't these float makers get together to make sure they aren't doing the same thing?

I'm loving your parade shots, Ben. And the video! You had a fantastic vantage point and you did a great job. Brave man. Did you sleep out the night before to get that spot?

No, in fact I arrived at the parade route at about 8:15, after the official start. There was an open spot on a window ledge that I was able to snag. I was somewhat deep in the crowd, but elevated above everyone.

the airplanes were likely inspired by the grand marshall Capt. Chesley Sullenberger, the pilot who landed a plane in the Hudson last year.

Oh good point, I hadn't even thought about the grand marshal.

The grand marshall is named rather late in the year by the Prez of the ToR, whereas, the float designs are set early in the year. So, maybe the ToR saw the aircraft designs & they became one more push to make the Captain a Grand Marshall.

It kinda makes you wonder if the designers were tipped off. But I hear they guard that secret pretty closely.
