refueling on a bike trip

the great thing about human-powered vacations (riding a bike everywhere you go) is that you get to consume a large quantity of additional calories to keep your body moving.  part of those additional calories came from a couple of brewery stops - a meal at the relatively new breakwater brewing (photo above), and a visit to stone brewing company (photo below) where we saw the new bottling line filling up cases of stone ipa.

biking on old highway 101

one of the most interesting things about riding the california coast from los angeles to san diego is the interesting routes that are carved out for cyclists.  the image above is of my friend andrew riding the bike path that has been built on old highway 101 - a road that used to be the main way to drive to san diego before the 5 freeway was constructed.  this road has been unused for so long (by cars that is) that trees and plants have grown up through the pavement.

i happened to snap this photo right as the amtrak train was passing through.

riding the coast

here's another picture from our recent bike trip.  this one is of me riding down the huntington beach path in the sun instead of the rain!  i'll have a few more photos over the next few days.

skywatching at doheny state beach

our first night of the bike trip was at doheny state beach.  we survived a night of more rainfall, and woke up to this beautiful sky on the beach.

more skywatch friday can be found right here.

meet my friend matt

during the past two summers i've taken bike trips on the east coast with some friends from college. my friend matt has always been at the center of these trips. his love of cycling is certainly a big reason that i have grown to love riding my bike as much as i have. his photography is certainly part of the reason that started this blog.

well it turns out that matt just found out he has leukemia. needless to say, he and his family were stunned.

matt, our thoughts and prayers are with you. may you have a speedy recovery! if you'd like to follow matt's journey to recovery, you can check out the website that his family set up, right here.

back from the bike trip

i'm back in pasadena now after a week of riding from pittsburgh to dc via bike paths and campgrounds. i'm exhausted but i also had a fantastic time.

for those looking to waste a few minutes, i've posted the rest of the photos from the trip online.

one final image

here it is, the last image i'll post from my trip to the east coast. the bike trip was possible because I was asked to participate in the wedding of my college friend peter (congrats you two!). here we see a covered bridge in lancaster county (where the wedding took place), with the silhouettes of the wedding party at the end of the tunnel.

tomorrow i'll start posting images of pasadena. if you missed the link when i posted it earlier, you can see more photos from my trip right here.

10,000! - i'd like to say thank you to all of my loyal blog readers. sometime this morning this blog will surpass 10,000 visitors. in less than a year this thing has grown beyond anything i could have ever imagined. thank you all so much!

enough to take my breath away

my favorite image from the bike trip. this one is from our campsite at janes island state park on the eastern shore of the chesapeake. aside from a little cropping, this hasn't really had any editing done to it.

dolles salt water taffy

the size of the seagull in this shot completely took me by surprise. i was hoping to capture the scene on the boardwalk in rehoboth beach in delaware and the classic looking taffy sign, but the bird swooped in to my viewfinder. i like it!

this is another image from the recent bike trip. a few more pictures will follow and then i'll get back to posting about pasadena.

calm after the storm

we took cover to avoid the storm brewing above us as we biked through maryland. it included hail, rain, and some strong wind, and left us with some incredible sky above this farmhouse.

bicycle trip beginnings

okay, over the next few days i'll be posting a few pictures from my recent bicycle trip. the first is a view of the philadelphia skyline taken from the ben franklin bridge where we crossed into new jersey on the first day of our journey.

if you are interested in seeing more pictures, i've created a short rundown of the trip which can be found right here. more to come tomorrow, enjoy!

il fornaio

high end italian eatery on the one colorado plaza stars in this week's pasadena neon.

bike trip update: one of the people on our ride works for the philadelphia inquirer. while we were riding he completed a new episode of his weekly video series "outdoor philadelpioa". you can see it right here.

checking in from the side of the road

just a quick note from the bike trip. here we are fixing a flat along the side of the road in maryland. we've biked over 200 miles so far, with well over 100 still to come. highlights include our trip to dogfish head brewery, the cape may-lewes ferry, and weathering a hailstorm from the mens room at our janes island state park campsite.

internet options have been limited, so this is probably going to be it for now. tomorrow's post will be back to some older pasadena images. more pictures of the bike trip will be posted once i'm back home (aug. 18ish).
