city hall in sepia tone

it's probably my most frequently posted subject in pasadena, but it's just so hard to resist the iconic dome. here she is once again in all her glory.

oh, for those regular readers, friday neon has been put off for the second straight week. its not that there is no more neon left to photograph, i just haven't gone around town with my camera at night lately. i'm deciding if the weekly feature is worth continuing, your comments on the issue would be appreciated.

tomorrow's picture could be a little delayed. i'm participating in the rosarito ensenada down in mexico, so it might take a little while to get something posted. we should have some great pictures to share.

i live here?

every once in a while i need to take a step back and remind myself of the beauty found where i live. i'm sure we all need to do this whether we live in the usa, albania, or zimbabwe. having a photo blog forces you to look at your environment, hopefully bringing you to the realization that the world is an amazing place.

oh, this is a shot of our street. this is where i live and sometimes i can't believe that's true.

the academy 6

if you don't mind waiting a little bit for a movie to come out, the academy 6 theater in pasadena is the way to go. tickets are regularly $3, but drop down to $2 for a matinée. hotdogs are only $1 so don't feel bad about coming hungry. the best deal is probably wednesday nights where rumor has it you can get two tickets, two drinks, and two orders of popcorn for $10. not too shabby!

montrose and beyond

the things you see when traveling by bicycle are often quite majestic. although i'd never say that about the 210, it looks that way from above.

light on a hill

this picture was taken on a recent bike ride, on our way down camino san rafael - quite possibly the best downhill ride i've ever taken on a bicycle. you can see a very hazy downtown los angeles in the distance, and meredith and tim flying down the hill on their bikes.

it's arrested development

we discovered this lighthouse in a small marina on a bike ride along the santa monica beach trail. tacky yes, but significant for any fans of the short lived tv show "arrested development". if your a fan you'll recognize this as the location of the infamous banana stand.

rumor has it that an a.d. movie is in the works - fantastic news for those of us who feel it left us too soon.

busy as a...

bee.

it's crazy how quickly we can be consumed with daily activities. pausing at the top of a huge hill during my last bike ride allowed me to snap off this photo. if i had gone flying by, i would have totally missed out on all the action that was taking place in these bright flowers. this bee was not alone.

pasadena playhouse

seems like any blog about pasadena needs to have this iconic building pictured at least once. we have yet to go to a performance here, but i'm sure we will someday.

breaking from the clouds

this shot of the sun poking through was actually taken by my lovely wife - through the window of a car.

pasadena's iconic clock tower

not the first time this tower has appeared on my blog, but i still don't know its proper name.

update: thanks to the anonymous poster who mentioned that this is in fact st. andrew church.

make peace not chaos

i found this on the side of the villa parke community center a little while ago. not sure why it was put up there, but i like it.

barney's beanery

the west hollywood landmark has branch in old town pasadena. it's kind of like heaven if you like pub food, a good beer selection and tvs at almost every table. the restaurant is packed full of decor including flags and license plates from around the world, millions of random bar signs, and even an old bus that you can sit in.

cheese at whole foods

if i had a lot of extra time and money i'd split my time between shopping in whole foods and cooking and eating amazing meals. if you really love food, live in pasadena, and haven't been here yet you need to change that in a hurry.

city hall in the evening

this picture was taken just as the sun went down, before it was really dark, yet after the lights had been turned on. the effect is really amazing, i'm quite happy with it.

baseball is back

i had the pleasure of being a part of the record-breaking crowd on hand last night to witness the dodgers play the red sox. while the score may not have worked out for our boys in blue, it was amazing to experience 115,300 people at a spring training baseball game played on a football field. From the lines and crowds to the noise to the quirkiness of the whole thing - it was a sensory overload - and I'd do it again in a heart beat.

one more from our trip to san diego this week. i should be back to pasadena photos tomorrow. sorry for the delay!

san diego trolley

we took a ride on the trolley and got to see a pretty interesting side of san diego. this shot was taken at night after the fog had rolled in. it made for some very interesting lighting. I assumed this shot was too blurry, but I like how it turned out. just a reminder to never delete something off your camera until you get back to the computer and see it blown up.

stone brewing co.

our trip down to san diego included a stop at the wonderful stone brewing world bistro and gardens. this beverage welding gargoyle was found on the wall of the restaurant. if you are in the area, stop on by! Quite the experience.

sorry for this one being posted so late today, we've been down in san diego - hopefully some pictures from our journey will be posted later this week.

easter egg hunt

an image from pmc's easter picnic. i'm not sure who has more fun, the kids or the parents who get to see the looks of joy on their kid's faces.

hope everyone had a great easter weekend, and for those of you in the many countries who celebrate it, hope your easter monday is great. why doesn't the usa have this wonderful excuse for a holiday?

a balancing act at santa monica pier

not lacking in talent, but maybe in salesmanship. this guy was really trying to squeeze the last greenback out of the crowd - waiting until he had received a sufficient amount of money before performing his next act.

check out this view of a gothic looking church on lake avenue - with palm trees. gotta love california.

save rick's burgers

for as long as we've been in pasadena (less than a year) there has been a sign in the window of rick's saying that they have to find a new home. they continue to operate, but who knows for how long. the next time you want some fast food, skip the chains and go to rick's while you still can.

buster's in south pas

if you've ever taken the gold line from pasadena to la, you've probably seen this sweet red brick building. it has some tasty treats inside too, stop by sometime.

more of those clouds

this time from the 210 overpass. combining with how rare these clouds were was how clear the sky and mountains looked.

pasadena sky (with clouds)

much like my fellow pasadena blogger, I also noticed the sky on sunday. clouds like this are a rarity, and the pictures that resulted were really inspiring.

palm sunday peace parade

i had the pleasure of participating in the 5th annual palm sunday peace parade here in pasadena. this event has been taking place since the invasion of iraq. it grows larger every year, stretching for at least a full block this time. The plan is to continue this action until war is no more (so chances are it will be happening next year if you want to join in). not to get too political, or religious, but if you are interested in learning more about what you can do as a passionate christian for peace, check out the matthew 5 project.

if you are a native pasadenian and are wondering where in town this is located, it's actually found in south pasadena as the tower reads if you view it from a different angle.

from the villages of africa to the streets of pasadena

stumbled across this vendor at the pasadena city college rummage sale (which happens on the first sunday of every month). I remember seeing artwork just like this lining the roads of south africa, ghana, swaziland, mozambique, and zimbabwe. and now here it is in pasadena, with a lovely mark up. three cheers for globalization!

skiing mt. baldy

there is something incredible about living a half an hour from the beach, and an hour from a mountain you can ski on. we took full advantage of that fact yesterday with our good friends tim and debbie. what a beautiful day. this shot is particularly interesting because you can see the desert in the distance. snow and sand in the same picture.

i'm captivated by this old building. it looks like it stepped out from another time.

uno mas, por favor

nothing beats a well made taco, and king taco does them well. from this wonderful blog, I found the suggestion to try tacos al pastor, and I've been very pleased. the other one is carne asada, and they were both delicious.

vegetable rainbow

the new whole foods on arroyo (biggest whole foods store west of the rockies!) has the most beautiful produce display (aside from that one orange pepper that found its way over to the greens). this is a foodie paradise, so many wonderful things to buy. if only their prices were a little lower it would be the only place we'd ever shop.

white brugmansia

not usually one to post pictures of flowers, but these came out really well. how cool is it to have blooming flowers all year round? taking up close pictures is something i really need to experiment more with.

after several comments, the name brugmansia has been suggested (anonymously). thanks for the help!

march 2008 theme day: graffiti or street mural

this is a picture of the work of kenny scharf which you can find at the pasadena museum of california art. his work decorates the entire parking garage and is spilling out to the outside of the building, where this was taken.

there are 144 other daily photo blogs posting on this very theme today. check them out!
